The Victory Gardens for Peace Seed Bank Mission

Thank you for your interest and/or contribution to the Victory Gardens for Peace Seed Bank in Mendocino, California.

Our mission as a seed bank is fivefold:

  1. Preserve and develop locally adapted heirloom varieties
  2. Make these varieties openly available to the coastal community.
  3. Raise the awareness of saving seed
  4. Preserve cultural knowledge of growing soil, food and seed
  5. Develop a network of bioregional seed stewards for the Coast

Placing an order:

Browse the catalog. Email us at info@victorygardensforpeace.com with your name and address and let us know the seed index number of the seeds you are interested in.
We ask that you only order 7 packets of seed at a time, unless we/you are in a state of emergency and would like to request more. We will mail you the seeds free of charge! We are a community seed bank and only offer seeds to our neighbors in Mendocino, Lake, Sonoma and Humboldt counties. If you are not from the area and are interested in seeds,
check with your local library to see if they have a seed library.

Donations: We offer this service by donation or if you cannot afford, no worries- we have faith that the generosity of the community will see the value in this and will keep this going! Typically postage is 4-10$ depending on the size/weight of the seeds ordered. If you would like to make a financial donation or seed contribution, send to:

We are happy to provide seed saving resources to those who would like to contribute to this community resource. For those who are interested in growing out seed for the seed bank, let us know and we will give you greater access to rare varieties which need to be conserved. This seed bank is a part of the Victory Gardens for Peace Initiative which helps communities work towards resilience through promoting sustainable backyard and community gardening. We are a project of Ecology Action, a 501(c)(3) non-profit which works with communities worldwide to better feed themselves while conserving resources and building soil.

Thank you and happy gardening!!

We are signatories to the Safe Seed Pledge and the Open Source Seed Initiative. All seeds which pass through the seed bank are curated under and distributed by these promises:
Safe Seed Pledge http://www.gene-watch.org:
“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing are necessary to further assess thepotential risks of genetically engineered seeds.”

Open Source Seed Initiative http://www.osseeds.org:

“You have the freedom to use these OSSI-Pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrictothers’ use of these seeds or their derivatives by patents, licenses or other means, and to include this pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives.”

Although our seed bank is not certified organic, we also pledge that to the best of our knowledge all seeds are grown organically. If you wish to contribute seeds to the seed bank, we ask that you grow them organically!
